Jülich en Düren

Two other German towns in the vicinity of Maastricht are historic Jülich (approx. 33,000 inhabitants), located 48 km from Maastricht, and Düren (approx. 93,000 inhabitants), charmingly situated on the banks of the Rur River.

Jülich boasts several interesting attractions, such as its fortifications, the Citadel, the Hexentrum (the city gates), and an abutment from the Napoleonic Era. There is plenty to see in Düren, too, such as Burgau castle, parts of which date back as far as the sixteenth century, or the Dicke Turm, the ‘fat tower’ that was once part of the city's fortifications. There are also several interesting churches built along the banks of the Rur.
