Maastricht features more than 1500 listed monuments and historic buildings, including Vrijthof square and its twin churches the Sint Servaas Basiliek (Basilica of St Servatius) and the St. Janskerk (Church of St John), the Onze-Lieve-Vrouweplein square with its Onze Lieve Vrouwe Basiliek (Basilica of Our Lady), Sint Pietersberg hill, and St Lambert's Church, the design of which was inspired by the Sacre Cœur in Paris.

Maastricht is also famous as a destination for pilgrims, of which the shrines dedicated to Our Lady Star of the Sea, St Lambert, and St Hubert are among the most splendid.
